Default Do you need a passport...

Hi,
just a quick question.
Do you need a passport to travel through Europe starting from the UK.

I have read around on this and get conflicting views.

Cheers,
Cooler

Hi, it depends on the person's nationality.
A citizen from a European country that has adopted the Schengen Agreement does not need a Passport to travel in Europe, the national Identity Card is sufficient if there's a Control.

Every one else does.

http://www.axa-schengen.com/en/schengen-countries
indicates that the UK and Ireland aren't Schengen countries.
Hope this helps!

The only place I ever got asked for my passport when travelling in Europe is when entering or leaving the UK. Never been asked on the Spanish / French border or when entering Dublin from the ferry

That said, it is a requirement that you carry valid photo ID in Spain and for Brits thats normally a passport

You will need it to prove who you are, like when booking into a camp site or hotel etc. When the police stop you.
Some countries insist that you carry either an ID card or passport. Fines can vary from contry to country if you do not.

A valid ID , with your photo , address and signature is required in BeNeLux , at all times , when outside your abode ;
usually it can be either a passport or a national ( residence ) ID card ;
however , in any contact/s over the last 10+ years , with the ( traffic ) police here , my ( new style ) U.K. drivers' licence was also perfectly acceptable , so long as they could also check my local residential address , for which their vans and info-equipment are very-well geared .
But , as you progress eastwards , there mighn't be such plain sailing....
