Do Road Rules Work in other Countries?
From today Southern Ireland has brought in new road legislation supposedly aimed at reducing the many deaths we encounter on our roads - currently 227 deaths so far this year with 10 followed by 11 deaths for the last two weekends.
The new laws are:-
In addition to the above 32 new penalty point offences were introduced just about 8 weeks ago.
The culture in Ireland seems to be "To **** with any laws, we will do as we like and as we have always done". This seems to be compounded with an almost non-existent enforcement system by the Garda to uphold the laws.
What happens in other countries in Europe, or indeed around the world. Do drivers comply with road laws? Do the laws make any difference.

Spain has just started points system, but the other way round, you have so many and they deduct them off your total for offences ?¿?¿ .
Only if you have a Spanish licence though.
Drunk driving is the same point deduction as speeding, bit silly.

It is an 80 euro fine plus 2 penalty points if caught driving on the wrong side of a motorway or for driving the wrong way around a roundabout (to my mind both of these are suicidal and the driver should be toatlly banned / put off the road). It is the same fine and penalty points for stopping slightly beyond a stop line.
Anyone see any logic in this.
P.S. Just back from 2 weeks in italy where my daughter got married. Gorgeous country, but a little confused about traffic laws there too!!

Every country in Europe has different rules, but I think the Uk & Ireland do get the rough end of the stick.
I was stopped recenlty going to work at 04.30am for driving more than 30km an hour too fast in an 50km stretch.
The police officer finally gave me a fine of €92.00 fir 20km too fast because she thought a fine of €170.00 for 30km was a bit too steep
Lucky really cos 30km over the limit is normally a visit to court. phew !!

Laws have to be realistic and enforced or they never work
