Default Do I qualify for Greek healthcare sytem?

Hi

Moving to Greece in about a month (need to get residency certificate before Brexit interim period ends!). I will be retired, living on income from investments (shares etc.). In five years time I will also draw a UK-based private pension.

Since this income will be taxed (capital gains) I will be a Greek taxpayer - so I might reasonably expect to be able to use the Greek healthcare system without requiring private health insurance.

But ... can anyone confirm or deny whether this is the case?

Many thanks

Thanks for that, it helped. Bizarrely it seems that I may need to claim unemployment benefit in England in order to initially qualify for Greek health benefits. I've never claimed unemployment benefit in the UK, but I might now do so for a spell if it gets me Greek health benefits once I move!

Cheers

Hi Barney. You might want to check the eligibility for job seeker allowance (JSA). It's my understanding that only the 'new style' JSA is portable, ie can be received overseas. Not everyone qualifies for this payment, your income is taken into account.

See here for a benefits calculator

The link is provided on this UK governement website

Others living in Greece will be able to advise you better, but it may be that you need to take out private health insurance. Good luck with your plans.
