Car Insurance

I want to insure my English number plated car here in Italy, some years ago I did this successfully, but am now experiencing difficulties. Does anyone have any clues please?

Re: Car Insurance

Sorry. The insurance companies have started to refuse to insure foreign
registered cars in Europe.

I brought my old Fiesta back to UK from Spain and I had to go to an
expensive broker to get it insured in UK. The UK government insisted that I
had a UK policy in order to be legalin UK. The car was properly insured with
Direct Line in Spain. BUT I had to double insure it. I have also had to tax
the car in UK and Spain.

The car is only worth 500 pounds!

I am tempted to set the car on fire!

The situation is contrary to free movement of labour but the civil servants
in Europe havemutually exclusive arrangements.

I'm sorry. Taking your car toItaly was a mistake. I bet taht you will have
topay VAT on your car. This is illegal, but they will call it re registering
charge.
Pay up or torch your car1

molo bene!

Do you live in Italy? Do you mean want to get an insurance which is
valid in Italy for a UK registered vehicle?

I can't speak for Spain or Italy, but the situation in Germany IIRC is
that if you take up residence, you have to reregister the car within a
certain time period - in the case of a UK registered car, this would
appear to mean getting export documentation for the vehicle from the UK,
taking out a new insurance in the country of residence, and registering
in that country with new plates. A UK built car would most likely need
new headlights (LHD-RHD conversion) and possibly emission controls as a
minimum.
Possibly the AA may have information.

Re: Car Insurance

I Live in Italy but use my British registered & insured car for two reasons:
1. The insurance is believe it or not cheaper in the UK than Italy and 2.
You can get away with anything if you have British plates. It's worth
remembering that by law a British insurer must cover the car Third Party in
any european country for the duration of the policy (although they try to
avoid telling you this).

Could you pls provide a reference for the comment that "by law an insurer must cover you third party anywhere in Europe for the duration of the policy"?

My UK insurer (Norwich Union) told me that I was covered for 90 days only, which is a real pain.

car insurance

I managed to insure my uk plated car in Spain and I can use it all over the EU, as I live in Spain France Italy.

the Insurer email address is in Torremolinos.
[email protected]
they are british

insurers in the UK will ask for proof of return by ferry, so if you overstay the 90 days they will not pay your claim.
That s the bummer of living on an island!

so by insuring it on mailand europe you bipass the problem.
