Default Best EU country to move to? Only just decided to do it!

Hi,

we need basic advice about the best countries in the EU to consider making a permanent move to.

we want somewhere thats got a good educational system for our 3 kids aged 9, 8 and 4 - a large english side to it too as non of us have a second language, i also kind of want it to be quite like home as I am a very timid person and not to good at change so don't want a country that i will be like a fish out of water.
of course we want warmth! ( what a chance to the cold uk eh!? ) but pref not blisteringly hot.. i love warm weather but don't handle extreme heat all day very well.
cost of living has to be average, not to high as my husband will be the sole worker until the kids are older.

we have no idea of house prices in diff countries at the moment or if renting is better... basically we know nothing and are starting from scratch! At the tiny idea of going.

We are very serious about the moving idea and want to do it by the end of next year, we wont be selling our property to buy another until that time comes and until them will have limited cash to go back and forth to a country, hence needing good advice before hand!

any help would be greatly appreciated, getting out of the UK is all i dream of these days!

thanks

Well it sounds like Southern France, Spain or Portugal to me!
But your main problem will be the same in all of them ...... getting work

That was my worry!
We have been warned about the job situation overseas...

My husband is a manager of a company at the moment, which doesn't seem to be any good for moving overseas at the moment, BUT, he does have various driving licenses, in all sorts, heavy vehicle, up to the largest ones, he's done long distance before etc.. its not really what we wanted him to go back to doing, but is there more call for that kind of work overseas?

I'm starting college to become a hairdresser soon, is that a skill needed too?
We were planning to go before I finished my course - even if I finished it I wouldnt be looking to work until the kids were all at least 11 - so my youngest being only 4 nearly thats a while off .

I am starting to think we are both unemployable overseas!
:curse:

Likely Spain is better for you. You would need to go into a heavy expat area to find a large portion of English speaking people though. Your husband shouldn't have any problems finding long distance lorry work, I believe that is in high demand.

Just to play devils advocate though..

You want to move to a country with a good education system, large English speaking community and oh yeah, good weather. You will also face the prospect of lower wages than you are used to in the UK. Are you absolutely sure you want to move? I think you are gonna get a shock if you do.

Spanish women are nuts about their hair!! Trouble is there are so many salons around! Maybe you could do mobile though in a high expat area.

Average wages in Spain are said to be around 13000 euros a year, although I'm not quite sure how accurate that is. Lower cost of living, lower wage structure.

It doesn't mean you are unemployable, after all many have done it .... you just need to do your research

Its crazy I know... basically i want to move to a 'hot' version of England!! but want to escape the bad attitudes, politics etc ( i know i'll get that anywhere we go - but i wont be able to understand it so that suits me ) :-P

I am now starting to see why only lottery winners and well off retired people move overseas!

My husband said that it would be easier to move somewhere scenic very far down south where it was warmer but still UK... err... isnt that alot of peoples plan then they realise that there are no jobs there? Same situation! need to be a lottery winner or retired and well off, lol

there must be some normal people who made the break for it without huge amounts of cash behind them and made a good go of the life overseas?
Or are they a rarity and lucky?

I'd better get my numbers on for the lottery then...

Well ...... a lot of people start their own businesses based on the ex pat community. I know of an IT specialist who has done well here, another started her own property sales & rental site, an estate agent, and also an alarm fitter. Only the IT guy used his UK experience.

Go onto the Spanish forum (very busy) and ask what people did

No no, I'm not trying to put you off. Just trying to make you think. Your husband will be able to get long distance lorry work, but is that what he wants? I have no idea what the rate of pay would be but less than the UK is a given. Will it be enough to pay the bills? Yes. Would it be good to enjoy a good quality of life? Probably not.

Have you considered Cyprus? Warm climate all year round, large ex-pat community in certain areas, local laws based on UK law, majority speak English as well, and they drive on the same side of the road as we do in UK.

I'm heading that way later in the year - just looking for the right school for my daughter.
