what qualifications?

hello, i originally joined this site last year with a view to moving to Spain in relation to a job offer i recieved, but it fell through.
Since then i returned to college and i am close to passing my city and guilds 2330 level 2, then i am going to take my part p and 17th edition this summer.
would these quals be acceptable to move to Australia as a skilled migrant as i do have 6 years electrical experience behind me?
any help would be great, cheers

I think the 6 years experience alone would qualify without the qualifications. Provided your experience was in the right areas of course. I think the work experience also has to be 12 months in the last 24 or something like that. Perhaps someone else on here can clarify?

Hope this helps

thanks for the reply, i was unsure whether my C+G would be recognised as a high enough qualification as i'm going to manage to do it it 1 yr and i thought any trade cert had to over 2 to be recognised?

Hiya Matt

The Vetassess website states the following:

For applicants who have not completed any formal training you must provide documentary evidence that you have been employed in your trade area for a minimum of two years. This is a mandatory requirement. Applicants who do not have formal training qualifications or have not been employed for a minimum of two years will not be able to progress to the practical skills assessment.

I think because you have 6 years and your formal training you should be okay.

Don't forget lots of electricians have no qualifications as such but have worked in the trade for 10, 15, 20 years and you probably learn more this way than you ever would at a college.

Include the C&G syllabus to demonstrate the things you learnt on the course.

Good luck!

I agree working in the trade, hands on experience does give you an enormous amount of knowledge. However no offence to your above comment but does working in the trade teach you how to work out the coil voltage if the line voltage is 440volts in a star connected system and the windings are 7ohms each. What is the synchronous speed of a 6 pole induction motor when connected to a 440v 50hz 3 phase supply? These questions were on the electrical mechanic theory/regulations exam for WA.

85% of the questions were regarding the regulations and general knowledge which admittedly if you read the regs book and work with electrics you would know or have a good idea of, but there is still a couple of technical ones which i was never shown in the field only in the college.

I would enclose copies of every course you have attended as this way you have a better chance of not been contacted for a technical interview.

Best of luck.

Yeah that's fair enough. I was merely pointing out that the experience alone that Matt has would probably be sufficient, but that he has formal qualifications is better. He was concerned he wouldn't be able to apply because his qualification was only 1 years worth.

not to burst your bubble but theres now way on earth that they will pass a spark with two years experiance and no formal qualifications ;)
under the old system if you had no qualifications you needed 7 yrs experiance the new system is regarded as stricter than the old and pathway D has been removed ( the old 7 yrs experiance only bit )

regardless of whats witten on the vetts site they want formal qulifications
( 900 hrs at tech or similar with a recognised qualification ie C&G ) and 2 yrs post qualification experiance

regards steve

Re: what qualifications?

so if i were to take an nvq level 3 in electrical installation (4 yr apprenticeship) its likely that i would need 2 years experience after that?
arent there any other routes i could take to emigrate to aus before 2014!? :(

ideally i would like to move to australia as soon as possible, obviously its not as simple as this.
i would like to do the apprenticeship in australia, but yet again i dont think its that easy.

what about doing the 4 year apprenticeship in england, is there anyway of emigrating to australia after ive completed it?

any info appreciated. thanks! :D

I appreciate that Steve, merely relaying what is on the Vetassess website. You may very well get in to do the practical on the 2 years/no qualification route, but it's highly unlikely you will be successful!

as i had enough experience to bang the course out in a year totalling 850 hrs would that mean i could not apply? or could i count my extra hrs from the 17th edition i will be doing in june?
or is 6yrs prior experience and the c+g L2 enough?

matt i suggest tha you speak to an agent who specialises in skilled applicants
the way i understand it the experiance dosnt start untill your qualified.
as i said earlier pathway D has been removed and they are looking for formal qualifications ie appretiship and 2 yrs expieance, re your 850 hrs how would they know how many hrs youve studied?? was it one day a week or 1 day and an evening ?? which would add 50% more hrs to your total

like i said as your training isnt the formal route i would seek some proffesional help even if it was just to clarify that your application would get through to the practical assesment

regards steve

ps having just read the email from vetts ( copy in after practical assessemnt thread ) you may be able to get through with pre- qualification experiance again this is someone`s interpretation ( from vetts ) and i would still seek a proffesional opinion

Re: what qualifications?

Hello everyone. Im new! great site loads of info.
Our situation OH is a trainee electrician hes 33. been in the job 6yrs and hoping to complete c&g part 2 in june. I understand he needs 2 yrs exp to do the vetasses thing. But would he be able to get a sponsorship before this. Not nec as an electrician?
His mum lives in Brisbane and has a close family friend with a cctv fitting business and could sponsor him. Does he have to be experienced in this??
Trying to get out there by the end of this year ideally
