VETASSESS ROUTE
 

Hi everyone,

I have my Skilled Migration Visa and i went the vetassess route. How do i go about getting my A licience? Do i still need to get a TRA to enable me to get an ARTC? If i need one.

If so can i apply for the TRA from the UK, and do i actually need to do anything other than send documentation?

I thought the whole idea of doing the vetassess was to bypass this.

I'm looking at heading to WA in 2-3 months.

Once you get to WA, go and see Energy Safety (or get in touch with them from the UK now if you want). Show them your certificates from VETASSESS and pay the registration fee. They'll give you a list of TAFE's around Perth where you can sit the licensing course. Once you pass the 2 week course you can apply for your A Grade license.

There was talk of them changing the system (you would have to have a provisional license for 12 months) but from what I can gather on here, they're just going to stick with the old system. Not 100% sure on this though, best speak to Energy Safety.

It doesnt seem as daunting as i thought. I've been in touch with EnergySafety and this was the reply. Its basicaly saying what you have said but may have some other info for other people.

In response to your email regarding clarification of overseas recognition of Qualifications, all applicants wishing to obtain a Western Australian Electrical Worker's Licence based on qualifications gained overseas must first have those qualifications assessed by 'Trades Recognition Australia' (TRA), if you already hold a visa to work in Australia, or 'VETASSESS', if you have yet to obtain a visa to work here.



If you apply through VETASSESS, then you will practically assessed and given the classification appropriate to your skills, which you will then use to apply to EnergySafety. If you apply through TRA however, what endorsement you were to apply for would depend on the type of electrical work you have been performing in your own and other countries and would wish to perform here.

If you wish to be able to perform 'A' Grade Electrical work (i.e.: 'Fixed-wire Installation Work' or 'Electrical Fitting Work') then you would need to obtain the endorsement 'Electrical Mechanic' or 'Electrical Fitter'. Once obtained, apply using the appropriate application form along with a copy of your 'Australian Recognised Trade Certificate'. Upon receipt of this you would be required to sit the assessments of competency as outlined in previous emails to you. Upon initial application you would also be able to apply for a 'Permit to Work Under Supervision' if you have already found gainful employment.

Once you have been assessed you are required to submit the assessment paperwork they provided, and the attached application form to Energy Safety. On receipt of the appropriate application form and payment, we shall issue you with an approval letter to undertake the Electrical Trade Licensing course (2 weeks full time/10 weeks part time). Upon successfully completing the ETL Course (course runs in WA only), we shall issue the licence accordingly.


If you wish to perform Restricted Electrical Work limited to 'Refrigeration/Airconditioning Equipment' or 'Instrument Process Control Equipment', then you would still need to obtain an 'Australian Recognised Trade Certificate' endorsed 'Refrigeration Mechanic (EL)' or 'Electrical Fitter (Instruments)' accordingly. Again apply using the appropriate application form and you would then be required to sit the appropriate assessments of competency.

Unfortunately, if you already hold a visa to work and are unable to obtain an Australian Recognised Trade Certificate for the above but would still like to obtain an Electrical Worker's then you would be required to complete the appropriate Western Australian Electrical Apprenticeship.

If you wish to perform electrical work to equipment connected via a 'Flexible Cord & Plug' then you would not need to apply for an Electrical Worker's Licence after the 1st July 2008, as this work is being de-licenced.
