Have a good look at the criteria, I was able to apply as special class but I remember there being some strict rules, one was based on the amount of hours of academic college I completed as part of my trade training, I think this is the area where most fail to meet the requirements. It seems like a lifetime ago now so make sure you read the detail of the requirements.

Hi,
I'm in exactly the same boat, instrument/electrical tech working on all the same kind of stuff.

when I was looking into it all at first I called vetasess and the woman I spoke to seemed like she couldn't really be bothered to answer my questions and seemed eager to get me off the phone, so I called future skills international and the guy there basically answered all my questions about gaining my ausy licence, and when mentioning to him I was instrument trained also he pointed me more toward the special class application.

I submitted all my evidence and its all been accepted on the instrument side of things, I had to provide further evidence on the electrical side as I didn't do a city and guilds general electricians course, I got my HNC in electronic and electrical engineering, and for some bizarre reason the content of that didn't meet any of the electrical criteria, but not too worry as a detailed reference from my boss sorted it out ;)

hope that helps dude
