G'day Minty........General Electrician is just that mate.......under the classification of general electrician there are several different licences - depending on which state you go to......

SA = a class electrician
qld = electrical fitter, electrical mechanic

Not too sure about the rest of the states.....

I would advise doing the wiring regs course through peer in adelaide......in sa it does'nt matter what your artc class is.....a spark is a spark:thumbup:......do the peer course and get a south australian licence mate.....which is now good interstate and is the equivalent to an electrical mechanic license in qld.

Click HERE for the link to peer

It costs aud$ 850......thats for all the reg books and the course.....you can do it via correspondence and then show up for 2 days in adelaide and do 1 day study and 1 day exam...........this is what I did mate.

I'm in qld and up here you have to register with TAFE and fill in logbooks as a restricted sparkie before getting your license......apparently it can take up to 12 months depending on your knowledge and experience.

I never went through vetasses as I was one of the last ones to go through TRA for my trade recognition.

You don't need a visa to do the peer regs course.......BUT......you will need it and your ARTC to apply for a license........if the visa is on it's way mate.....then contact peer and see about doing the course via distance learning.....that's how I did it.......they send you the regs and a workbook......when you complete the workbook then you go to adelaide for 2 days to do the exam......simple!

And YES.........the license is valid anywhere in australia......saves you spending more money on actually 'transferring' it to another state.
