NEED HELP WITH MY ELECTRICAL LICENCE PLEASE!!!!!!!

hi all,

i'm an irish electrician working in sydney.... i've recently got my artc and am wondering what the best way of getting my licence is?? i know there are definitely 2 options and i've recently heard a 3rd...
the 1st is TAFE, which i really don't want to have to do... i mean who wants to go to college after a hard days work for 4 hours a night for 6months!!!

2nd is peer veet... from reading previous posts, this seems the best option, but i'd like to know what the timeframe is from start to finish if i got stuck into it... and also is it possible to do the test and get the licence all in the 1 weekend in adelaide or would it mean a few trips?? finally does anyone know how hard it is to change a SA licence for a NSW one, or is it better to work on it until it expires then renew it as an NSW one?

the option i've heard of recently is through electrogroup... aparantly a lot of unlicensed sparkies were caught in sydney last year and the ETU set up an easier way of getting the licence through electrogroup in sydney... has anyone heard of this?

i appreciate any help i can get.... thank you in advance

how's it goin. I'm an Irish electrician in Perth. I done the course in Adelaide and I'd recommend it. You just ring them up and they send you out all the stuff you need. When you have finished the workbook you just ring them and book your place for the course...you could probaly book in for the next day if you really wanted! Allow about a month to complete the workbook as there's alot of stuff in it. None of it is really that difficult but it is time comsuming trying to find all the answers from the regs book. When I got my SA licence I just went to the licencing department in Perth, paid the fee and they emailed me the licence number 2 days later. Think they posted the licence out the week after that. There is an agreement between all the states where they have to recognise licences from other states so I presume it would be the same to transfer it to a NSW licence.

Best of luck with it mate..It'll be worth it in the end.

Hi agillick,

Just noticed your a spark in perth... We are hoping to be over by the end of the year and my OH is a spark. He will be hopefully getting his licence through energy safety. But just wondering what the work is like at the moment, and have you any experience of how difficult or easy it is to get electrical work in the mines, or power stations.

Would appreciate any info you have.
Thanks
Tina

Hi Tina,

There seems to be a good bit of work around Perth at the minute. Your OH will need to get his trade assessed by TRA before he can apply to energy safety to do the exam for the licence. I'm not sure how hard it is to get work in the mines but there are alot of big projects starting this year including the Gorgon Gas plant. Boddington goldmine which is only about an hour and a half drive from Perth is recruiting sparks at the minute.

Hope this helps,

Adrian

Hello
I have just finished the workbook from Peer and am due to do the exam in two weeks. It appears to be the easiest way to get a licence in NSW. I also did Tafe in NSW and got the Cert 3 exam. They then pulled me for not having a years experience in Australia.I ended up taking them to court because I was fed up with the whole thing and lost the case.
So Peer is the only way to go. From what I heard it is easy then to transfer it in NSW.
I will let you know. Never heard of electro group?

You just need the books they send out with the workbook but if you need to bring other books then I think you are allowed to. I didn't have to do the etsa section when I was there. The instructor just said don't bother with it. The exam is actually hard to fail if you have completed the workbook are confident enough at finding the answers in the regs book.

You have to draw a diagram of a switchboard but the instructore gave me a copy of it the day before I done the exam so I was able to bring it with me and study it that night. I just started with a new company a couple of weeks ago and they seem to have alot of work coming up. There was probably about 25 or 30 jobs for sparks in the paper last week in Perth so it shouldn't be too hard to find work once you have the licence. Where in Oz are you?
