Maintenance Electrician needing advice please!

I am a time served maintenance electrician with my HNC/HND working in the water and wastewater industry in the north of England. My fiancee and I are hoping to apply for a permament visa to Oz in May once we have lived together for a year(one of the requirments stated on the visa aplication). My fiancee has already had her skills assessed and passed her IELTS she is a teacher so I haven't needed to have my skils assessed. I have found the forum really useful but it has worried me slightly about what order I need to do things when I get to Oz. I would really appreciate it if anyne could send me in the right direction. we are hoping to move to the goldcoast.

thanks

Mike

you need to get an artc
australian recognised trade certificate

http://www.workplace.gov.au/workplac...nresidents.htm

apply whilst your still in the uk and this will speed things up ;)
use a mates address in aus as they wont send it overseas

after you have your artc and you arrrive in aus you`ll need to get a current cpr cert
any local red cross or st johns will suffice they run courses most weekeneds for about 80 bucks

you then apply to the electrical safty office for your licence

http://www.deir.qld.gov.au/electrica...seas/index.htm

you will most likey be issues a permit to train under supervision whilst you do an qld / au wiring course
see the qet site for more info

http://www.qet.edu.au/

this lot should get you started

Well in that case you need to be looking here: http://www.bpeq.qld.gov.au/AM/Template.cfm and here: http://qld.engineersaustralia.org.au/jetspeed/ :)

Unless you're going somewhere other than QLD that is :D Let me know and I'll get you the link for the right state :)

Thanks for the links Wendy but I think I would only be able to register as an Engineer if I had a degree. I am only a maintenance technician but whilst i was serving my time I just tried to get as many qualifications as i could, hopefully ill put them to some use in years to come.

thanks for the help

After reading through the links you sent Steve would I be right in thinking i only need to take the Aus wiring regs as I am a maintenance electrician?, rather than taking the inspection and testing course that approved electricians take?

If this is the case do you know of the quickest way to take the regs course?

Thanks for your great help so far

Sorry but I have another question when I apply to the ARTC do I need to send a copy of my certificates or the originals? and do I need to get them certified by a solicitor?

Thanks

Mike :)

Send certified copies, you do get them back but it's better to be safe than sorry. If you take them to a JP, they usually do them for free. :)

Hi wendy and steve sorry to bother you again but i have another question. As i am a maintenance electrician I beleive from reading through the immigration site that the closest job to mine would be the electrician special class. I am right in thinking though the job description i put on the artc form would still be electrical mechanic?

thanks

mike

It doesn't really matter as they will classify you as they see it rather than what you want. So even if you put Mechanic down, they can still say you are a fitter. If you want electrical mechanic then you need to show plenty of evidence of disconnecting from and connecting to the mains and they will give you electrical mechanic. My OH had this as he was responsible for the whole plant as opposed to just machinery. He wired up a new building that was erected on site, wired up new machinery, re-wired old ones etc plus he had lots of domestic, commercial and industrial experience before that.

In QLD a mechanic can get a full licence once they have completed the courses etc, but a fitter will need more training to be able to get one. In South Australia, either a fitter or mechanic can apply for an unrestricted licence once they have done the PEER course and passed the exam - not sure about other states. :)
