Licensing for Overseas Electricians in NSW
 

So I spoke to the guys at Fair Trading this morning - and it appears that the only guaranteed route to licensing for overseas sparkies is if you hold a Vetassess OTSR.

There is a pay scale for unlicensed electricians in the state, but to get licensed without a Vetassess OTSR you would need to find a TAFE to accept you on a Cert III course. I don't know how easy this would be as in SA it's only possible with a contract of training - an apprenticeship!

I was advised to write to the home building licensing manager, PO box 972, Parramatta, NSW 2124, fax 02 9895 9956 and express concerns to them.

The mutual recognition route may still be an option though for anyone stuck in limbo :)

Was there any reason given for why they have stopped accepting ARTC?

There was a time ARTC plus AS3000 wiring rules assessment and a year worths of references was acceptable.

Seems a strange decision but the whole licencing is a bit of carry on full stop.

No reason - and inless the guy I spoke to is wrong, only the Vetassess OTSR will be accepted. He could be wrong though as SA said the same, but I used the guy from Skills for All / Skilled Migrant Services to explain that Vic Uni do the same test and finally got provisional out of them.

I did have a look on the NSW FT Site and none of the pathways mention an ARTC now.

It's a bit of a worry as I've had a NSW Licence for about 5 years as I went down the old ARTC and PEER with mutual recognition route.

I don't hold AQF Cert III Electrotechnology wondering if I should maybe do it even though I have a licence.
