Hi Rob,
Welcome to BE. There is a lot of info on here about the things you are wanting to know about. Do a search and see what you find!
There is a Skilled Workers visa which is a 175 I think. This is basically a Permanent Residence visa that is awarded if you have the right skills to get into Aus. Yes you are correct in thinking that you would need to undergo an assessment of some sort. Whether that would be for you building experience or sparky experience I don't know. I would go with the one that you are most qualified and experienced in.
Once you get out to Australia, you are not restricted to the type of work you applied for your visa with so you could change profession once you're out there.
My OH is an electrician so I know a bit about what you have to do for that. You will need to gather info on work experience, qualifications, references from employers, tax records (if self employed) the list is endless! There is another thread on here where I posted. Have a look. http://britishexpats.com/forum/showthread.php?t=522348
You will be required to sit a practical (again do a search for vetassess practicals) and the first full batch of assessments have just finished, so peopl are now waiting for their results.
I think once you have a positive Vetasses letter, you are able to apply for a provisional license and are then able to work supervised. You will need to go to college once in Oz to get up to speed with the regulations etc. over there. Think this is around 12 weeks in the evening and you have to sit exams to pass. Once you have succesfully completed this you can then apply for you A class license which allows you to work as you do over here in the UK.
As for the visa process..... once your vetassess has come back (the next sitting of practicals is July) you then have to submit your visa application. For this you will need to submit everything you did for your vetassess as well as some more info just for the visa. Things likes marriage certificate, statements about your relationship etc. If you are not up for the challenge of doing the application yourself you can always use an agent. I hear Go Matilda are a good one to go with. But they do cost! If you're not sure though, it would be worthwhile talking to one as it's a lot of money (vetassess $2200 and visa $4920 plus medical costs and police checks) so you want to make sure you get it right first time!
Look at the DIAC website

There is plenty of info here for you too.
Do lots of research and reading. That's all we've been doing since January! There are also expos and things like that you can attend.
Good luck. I hope it goes smoothly for you.

"I hear Go Matilda are a good one to go with. But they do cost! "
=> I think you'll find our fees are not out of line with other agents, and in fact are a lot cheaper than many.
Best regards.

Re: help!!
Agents in general do cost a lot more than if you were doing it yourself, but that's down to the OP to decide how much they can pay for the service and obviously do the necessary research about prices etc.
Perhaps I should have said "Agents do cost. I hear Go Matilda are good"
Or perhaps I shouldn't have mentioned their name at all?

You can mention our name as much as you want. It was the inference as to our charges I didn't like!
Best regards.

Think I'll just steer clear really. Can't seem to say anything right when it comes to you Alan. So if I say nothing, you won't have to comment

Why do you say that, Janna?
Have our paths crossed before?

Re: help!!
Yep, I can see we did - on the Pathway D question ...
Not a problem though from my perspective.
Best wishes.
