Default Electrician Licencing info - Melbourne

Hubby had the following info re. obtaining electrical licences from a member on Britvics:-

To get licence you require at least the following (Assuming working in VIC?)
UK Qualifications (Assuming JIB Approved?) do not cut anything in VIC, they only assist in getting you pass practical trade schooling, prove evidence of prior learning and you MUST have the apprenticeship indenture paperwork (This proves you have completed an official apprentice etc) otherwise you may face a long haul in additional paperwork and/or trade schooling.
This basically means that is goes towards getting a Electrical mech certificate.( Certificate III in Electrotechnology Systems Electrician)

Once you have Electrical mech certificate, which must be applied for via the TRA – Trades Recognition Australia (Use all the documentation for which you applied for Visa, copies required and verified in Australia, this can be done at Post office or Police station (Assuming granted under skilled independent?)

Costs for successful applications for certificate is refunded, I think $300?

Once the TRA receive the Cert application, they sit down monthly and a committee assess applications and issue a cert or not, so not a quick process.
Now with the Certificate in hand this proves your trade schooling is complete, now for the fun part –

To get a licence for VIC for example – (By the way this is the hardest and the best one to get one) you need to complete the following – Used to be called LEM, now called the LEA Licensed Electrical Assessment, which then allows you to apply for an “A Grade” licence.

Safe Working Practice (SWP) Assessments - This module demonstrates competency in working around potentially live equipment prior to service/fault finding, disconnecting/connecting etc

Licensed Electrician Practice (LEP) Assessments - This module demonstrates competency in practical installation skills. Involves wiring up a standard Australian Switchpanel to Australian standards etc and includes testing and inspection installations.

Licensed Electrician Theory (LET) Assessments – This module is based on the AS3000 “Wiring Rules”, (Not that dissimilar to 7671 )involves in depth knowledge of the rules/regs, cable calculations, selection etc. I would recommend ordering this prior to arriving and reading up as much as possible, although cannot be claimed back in a TAX return if purchased in the UK.

Also required is AS3008, cable selection (Used inconjunction with AS3000)
In addition need to download – Service installation regulations - http://www.victoriansir.org.au/sirs.html (Free download!)

All of the above exams can be taken in any order, but all have to be passed prior to applying for a licence.

You will need to take the tutorial classes in all of the above components to have any chance of passing the 3 assessments and these need to be booked as soon as possible, as they are held constantly and are booked up often, as with the assessments themselves, as all apprentices take this as they complete their schooling/modules.

They are held mostly for people who have had a break from trade school, interstate licence transfer (VIC licence is compatible with interstate licences, but licensees who hold other state licences cannot automatically apply and work in VIC!

Now that you have got all of the above out of the way, you need to apply for a licence, in VIC – Energy Safe Victoria. These are the Electricity police and have the final say in all matters electrical.

Just when you though all that was enough, this only allows you to work for a company that already holds a Registered Electrical Contractors Licence, they are responsible for the work you undertake for them.

You carry out the work, you complete a Electrical Safety Certificate using your licence details, then the REC holder submits the ESC to ESV and the client you have worked for, which can be audited at any time!

If you wish to work for yourself, you need to hold an A Grade Licence, get a course for a contractors licence and insurance.
