Standard of electrical work in australia
Hey all. Been in australia for the last 2 years as a spark. Just wondering what everyone else thinks of the standard of the electrical work here? Its seems to me that everything is done the quickest and cheapest way possible and the quality suffers as a result. I've seen some things that are shockingly bad but companies don't seem to care as long as they are making money. I do mostly fitout work and at best the cables are either cable tied to the ceiling or onto a catenary wire with sometimes very little segregation between power and data. What does anyone else think?

I actually work in the security industry now but we work along side the sparkies. You are right. Some of the work is very shoddy!

is to easy to slag of the work here
as you say some shocking practices,
pvc conduit installations seems to be paticulary poor as they switch to flexable to get around obsticles ( LOOKS SHITE )
personally i think a lot is down to self certification,
its never going to be examined or checked unless some one complains to the electrical safty office
as a former member of the nic i think something on the same lines should be in place here
but then again to be honest ive seen just as bad in the UK

i was qualifying manager for a firm back in the uk and did nothing but periodic/installation cerification.
i have searched many times on google for the same sort of company over here and nothing !!!
an idea for a buissness venture ???? would companys/estate agents etc go for the idea of having there installations tested every so often ???

Do you think they will ever set up an organisation for inspecting installations or are they happy enough to leave it as it is and hope nobody get electrocuted or buildings don't go on fire?
Another thing that puzzles me in fitout work is that they do a base build first where they do a basic fitout knowing that they tennant is going to come in and want it completely changed. The electrical contractor has to then rip out all the wiring that either they or another contractor has just finished doing and rewire it. Doesn't make alot of sense to me. Does anyone know if this has always been the way they do it?

Materials are cheap and nasty looking, correct?
Nothing is clipped, power points and 240v lighting & switches
in bathrooms and fekin soldering everything that moves to name a few !
Oh and their weatherproof power points suck donkey bal#@$ i reckon !
I've seen plenty of rough arse jobs back home but it's the industry standard here.
One thing I WILL say they have got right is making it so hard to get licenced
over here which they should do back home to stop the boat people wiring up houses for beer money
I think the longer you live here, the more you get used to seeing stuff that would usually stand out as WRONG. It's the way they do it here, but I get a twitchy feeling everything will swing more towards european standards in the coming years ?
