new vehicle - ship over/buy Cyprus?
Can anyone offer advice to this UK retiree moving permanently to Cyprus next year? I will need to replace my car. Has anyone else in similar situation dithered over the pros & cons of buying in the UK and shipping out - over buying in Cyprus on arrival? Also, someone I met at Paphos airport told me they had "opted" to purchase w/o paying the purchase ?tax, but were asked for quite a hefty sum back when they tried to re-sell
it (they kept the car!). I have no plans to return to the UK once I've moved, or to keep changing the vehicle, but I would be interested in finding more info about this.

Hi Colin and Holly,
I'm not in Cyprus yet, but from what I've discovered, the excise duty is pretty steep or you can opt to apply for what they call 'relief' if the car is for your own personal use. If successful you don't pay such a hefty sum but there are penalties if you decide you want to sell it.

It seems to me that there are some pretty good deals to be had in Cyprus itself which would remove the hassle of forms and taxes. Andy's Motors have been very helpful to me. I like the idea that you can hire a car from them at a cheap rate to be picked up at the airport and have it free if you buy a car from them. Their website is at: http://www.andys-motors.com/ren1.html
Good luck.

Colin and Holly,
We were told when we moved that the duty on importing cars was very high. At the time it was something like 2.70 per cc. This meant paying over £4k to bring our Zafria with us.
However, this has all changed now, our friends two cars cost them £700.
Other things to consider though:-
A large percentage of cars in Cyprus are imported from Asia, so the more popular makes are the likes of Toyota, Mitshubisi, Honda. The more popular they are, the easier they are to get serviced/repaired. If your current car isn't one of the above makes, it might prove a little harder to service.
Also, as long as you can prove that you are retired, you are exempt from paying any duty. This also applies for any service personnel in Cyprus. To make this easier, as said in the previous post, use someone like Andy's Motors who will have plenty of experience in dealing with this. You can get a really good brand new car this way for a fraction of the cost!!
Hope this was helpful.
Good luck

Thanks to Olltwit & Honest H for replies. I've made contact with Andys Motors.
