Moving to Cyprus
 

Hi my wife and I are seriously thinking of moving to Cyprus. We will both be 64 years old in June & July and was going to lease our house in Aberdeen and lease a Villa in Paphos area for a year to see how it goes,as we might be 65 by the time we get there,so would really appreciate some info on health service there also average cost of living ie, 2 or 3 bedroom villa utilities and council taxes.Also not sure how my pension,s would work once we were there.I know I am asking for a lot of info but any advise from someone who has done the same would be great. Yes been 3 times before once in hotel Ascos Beach long ago,then last year and year before in a Villa.The main reason for wanting this is my wifes health as you could imagine our scottish weather is not good and makes the wifes illness worse,she has COPD and the cold restricts her breathing.

Ok, you have a lot of questions, so i am sure others will pitch in too.

Timing, for me anyway, is important in this respect.

I would recommend you come in the winter. There are fewer tourists, and you get the chance to meet more of the local Expats and locals. There are many businesses closed up in the winter in Paphos, looks so different than in the summer.

Slowly though, the warm weather arrives, and things start to open up, tourists start to come, and it is very different.

You have lived in the worst time in Cyprus,, weather wise, now comes the summer, and later comes the winter again. This time you are prepared for it, and the following summmer.

Thanks for that,we have booked a Villa for 2 weeks in Aug and dont know if you know this company Flowron property sevices and they have offered to show us some properties when we are there,so may get some insight.

Hmmm, have you researched thoroughly into how the climate in Cyprus affects people with COPD? Certain times of the year the polution is really bad (especially on the coast) and many people end up hospitalisd with breathing problems.
The best place for someone with a lung problem would be up in the hills where the air is clean. Also July and August are unbearably hot and your wife would probably be confined to the house with fans (or air conditioning) as the heat is so intense that it makes breathing difficult.

I am not sure that August is the best time for you to arrive. I would recommend October or November and spend some time looking at the villages in foothills rather than any of the coastal areas.

Hi Veronica thanks for that,but the wife does like the heat she was a bit ill last year and right enough we rented a villa very near the coast,but we are going this year to a villa nearer peyia,and funny enough it is called Villa Veronica ha ha.

In that case I am sure it will be a lovely villa:rofl:
Just remember that the further you are from the coast the clearer the air will be so you may find that you will eventually look at some of the slightly higher villages like Kathikas etc.

Higher villages will come with a colder climate in the winter, but you have to make choices, especially when health is a major concern.

HI can anyone tell me what the cost would be in ie excise duty etc if I ship my car to Cyprus,have a rough idea what the shipping would cost.The car is a 2 litre hatchback.

I don't know the cost of shipping etc these days but my advice is don't do it unless it is a very special vehicle.

Taxes on a 2 litre over here are very high and I believe excise duty is also high on anything over 1.6.

Due to the current crisis, you can pick good quality cars at a much reduced price, well worth shopping around first.
