Hello HONEST_H,

I have been trying to contact you as your past feedback has been very useful. We would really appreciate your responce as we are seriously considering moving to Larnaca or Nicosia in a couple of months.
Would you please let me know the pros and cons to Cyprus.

Thank you

Hey ZiZi,

Sorry, I haven't been checking the forum for the past few days - things have been crazy at work (don't have internet access at home!)

There are lots of pros and cons to moving here and everyones list is different.

For me its the weather, socialising, pace of life, beaches/pools, good family time, and of course Keo!!

The cons - beauracy, racism/discrimination, hidden costs, long working hours, less money, water problem

My first peice of advice is property. Don't buy - rent. Until you really know were you want to live its easy to move out of rented accommodation and onto something else quickly. Selling houses here takes a lot of time.

Think carefully of the location. I work in Nicosia, but live near Larnaca. The commuting is a pain, but the fact that we're 5 mins from a beach is great. You can get a lot more for your money (renting or buying) in Larnaca compared to Nicosia.

Friends lived and worked in Nicosia for about 6 months, although they had rented a great house, the weekends just felt like any other weekend in the UK, they moved to the coast and now enjoy both worlds.

Schools - there are lots of private schools around. They aren't as expensive as private schools in the UK and are worth considering.

Pot of money - try and make sure you have a pot of money that can be used for unplanned stuff, you just don't know whats going to happen and when.

Health insurance - get over as soon as you arrive. It won't cover pre existing conditions, but its well worth it. Luckily my family are covered by my employers. Just as well really, I could have been €2222 out of pocket when I had to have my appendix removed in January!:(

Dear Honest_H,

My husband had actually turned down the job in Nicosia. I did not want to live in Nicosia away from the beach, and he didn't want to commute.

Also the water problem will be too much to put up with! Cyprus will only be for a summer holiday for us.

I know you lost a lot by buying your property in Cyprus. We too lost a lot of money by moving to Canada 12 yrs ago. That too was a huge mistake for us.

Thank you so much for responding to our questions, and wish you all the best with your move back home.

Hey ZiZi,

Sounds like you've made up your minds.

Good luck with wherever you choose to live. Its not an easy decision. Listening to people on here really helps though.

In saying that, every country has its pro's and con's. Its all about trying to find somewhere that has more pro's that con's. I hope you find somewhere soon.

So, as I say good luck, happy hunting.
