Considering a move and wanting honest opinions..
Hi all, im a new member. I am looking to move to Cyprus with my partner in 12-18 months. We are both realistic about the pro's and con's but would like as much advice/help as possible. We both work for the NHS and are hoping to find work before we move. Im more administrative, but im under no illusion this may not be possible to get work as I don't speak Greek. My partner is a trainee advance nursing practitioner, and has a number of years experience, but like most people we are willing to do anything to start off.
We are wanting to rent ideally near coral bay/peyia/kissonerga (I think ive spelt that wrong).
Can anyone suggest where to start off? we are registered with agencies for work. We have had quotes for transporting our furniture, but wonder if it would be cheaper to buy when we move (cheapest quote is £2950 for 20ft container)...
Any advice is appreciated. Thank you

First of all it is good to hear that you are being realistic and open minded. It is very difficult to find a job in Cyprus at the moment. Even if you do find one, the salary may not be much. Many people are selling their furniture etc because of moving back, or simply to make ends meet. So finding household goods and articles will be much cheaper than shipping things out. Best to just ship out sentimental things.

Are a lot of ppl leaving cyprus because of the economy? Your post says ppl are selling their furniture to make ends meat.. is it that bad? Ive been over a few times and thats not the opinion i got.
I appreciate your comments and i think your right about shipping... im back over in a couple of months to do more research.
Thanks again

It probably isn't a good idea to ship furniture over and then if things don't work out having to ship them back.
Far better to rent furnished. Whatever you do make sure you have enough money put aside for flights back if it doesn't work out. ( Don't touch that money for anything else)
Then at least if things don't work out you can return to the UK and put it down to experience. Look on it as an adventure.
Good luck whatever you decide.

The local markets have lot's of bargains where people are selling their possessions. There are even some auction houses around too.

Hi Sue, personally I would not move to Cyprus without speaking Greek at least at an intermediate level. Your employment prospects would be limited indeed. I do speak Greek at an intermediate level but this just doesn't seem to matter. In the Uk people can find a job even without any English sometimes. Also, keep in mind that jobs go often to friends and relatives. It is not uncommon for doctors to have sons/daughters that are trained in medicine and go on doing the same career, a bit like an inheritance.
A lot of nurses I have met are from Greece or Eastern European countries, some are from old Greek-speaking communities in the Caucasus.
Think carefully about moving to Cyprus, especially if you have good jobs in the UK (I do prefer life in the UK ).

Cyprus is a great place to live and work. Ship your container over and rent an unfurnished place with the white goods in. It would appear you have only had replys from the negative people.
There are now many people arriving into the Paphos region and settling down.
A lot will depend on the skills that you will bring. The main criteria is that if you have to work to live here then get the job offers first before moving.
If it does not work out then you can sell your furniture here and get more for it than you ever will in the UK.

I would not say I am negative, just realistic. I know a lot of qualified people who cannot find a job because they don't know anybody or their Greek is limited. This is by no means unique to Cyprus, it is always essential to learn the language to work in a foreign country, unless you are only dealing with expats and English-speaking foreigners.
It would be nice if things were improving, though.

Really? This doesn't match what I know at all. Unless Paphos is bucking the trend, what I knew was that a lot of people were leaving Cyprus and it was difficult to sell second hand items, so that in order for things to go, they had to be sold dirt cheap.
