Coming to Cyprus next week

Hi all,
Myself, wife and 8 yrs old daughter will be in Cyprus next week for our first visit. We have heard many good things about the island and although this is a holiday we will be looking at schools etc with a view to possibly moving there permanently.
If we do move we will be renting for the forseeable future. I work in the oil industry on a schedule of 28 days work, followed by 28 days leave. Our main criteria for chosing a location would be:

Easy access to good private school
Safe area, (I don't want to be worrying about my family while I'm away at work)
Good quality accommodation preferably with private pool if not too expensive

I know the long term Cyprus residents probably get tired of answerig the same questions all the time, but I would be grateful for any advice and recommendations on location, and especially which are currently the best schools,

Cheers
JayJay

Do you have any particular area in mind ? It's worth thinking about which airport you would be using assuming your wife will collect and drop off. If you are looking for British Curriculum schools there are more options in Limassol than Paphos.

Schools to check out :

International School of Paphos
Heritage School Limassol
Foleys Limassol
Logos Limassol

I am sure there are a couple in Nicosia also and possibly a couple more in Limassol - do a google and see what comes up.

My husband works away and I feel safe here without him - it is safer here than eslewhere in the world.

Hi Nic1,
Thanks for your reply, it is really comforting to hear that you feel safe there even when your husband is way at work. In fact I had heard many good reports about Cyprus which is one of the reasons we are considering relocating. How long have you been living in Cyprus? and how easy was it to make friends? We haven't got any relatives or friends in Cyprus, which means my wife will be managing on her own when I'm at work. However she is quite outgoing o will hopefully make friends fairly quickly.

We haven't got a particular area in mind, but will need to be within reasonable distance of a good private school and for that reason I'd thought that either Limassol or Larnaca would be the best bets. After trawling through a lot of posts on several forums the American Academy seems to be highly rated, although I can't find any discussion as to which school is best between Limassol or Larnaca.

Cheers

Hi, kids and I have been here since July - but we have spent the last 4 years coming to and from Cyprus as we have a house here. I am slowly making friends - getting out there and trying to meet people. There's a fair amount going on. We are in the Limassol area. Don't know what the schools are like in Larnaca sorry can't help there.

There is a forum for the Eastern end of Cyprus - will try and find the name for you.

Hi JayJay,

Welcome.

I've lived in the Larnaca area for 4 years now. 2 schools that are worth looking at are Med Junior and the American Academy. My daughter (8 years) goes to the Academy and loves it.

We've found that we got to know more people once Hannah started school.

In in main, most areas of Cyprus are safe, however, it might be better for your wife to live in an area where there is a large ex pat community. In Larnaca, this will be Oroklini/Pyla/Dheklia Road areas. It might make things easier to have ex pat neighbours if your away for a lot of the time.

Good luck with your move!

Any more questions, please ask.

Hi Honest H and Nic1,
Thanks for the replies.

In fact I have arranged to visit the American school and Med high in Larnaca during our visit. My daughter is also 8 years old, and I'm hoping she will adapt fairly quickly being as we have already travelled a lot ever since she was born.

These days I prefer to rent for at least a year before buying, this would give us time to get to know the area and see if we like it.

My wife is quite outgoing and hopefully will make friends with the other Mums at the school. She has also been training to be a Psyhotherapy Counsellor, I don't know if there would be any demand for her services on the island as everybody seems to be much more relaxed than in the UK.

Only 24 hours until we arrive, can't wait,

Cheers

Unfortunately we had to cancel the fllights our daughter got sent home from school on Friday with flu like symptoms. The school has to be cautious because they have had some cases of swine flu. We decided to wait a couple of days in case she got better but unfortunately is worse and can definitely not fly today.

Just called Thomas Cook and been told we will not get a refund, I'll check if the insurance will cover it.

We will try and arrange a visit during the next school break

Thanks once again for your replies
