Visiting UK while spouse visa application pending

Hi,
Is it possible for my wife (a non-visa national) to visit the UK while she has a spouse visa application pending? The application was made from outside the UK, in Spain, where we are both resident. She has her passport as she paid extra at the Visa Application Centre to keep it during the application process.

Thanks

Not advised while an application is pending....... it would be up to border officials to allow entry.

I remember reading a post which i can't find now, UKVI will withdraw the application if you enter the UK while have an application pending .
This was for an american guy who was still waiting for response to his visa application.

I might be wrong here but that is what I saw. I suggest emailing UKVI and get it in writing on whether this can happen or not.
