Default Visa for non EU partner

I am a British Citizen and currently pregnant. My partner is a non-eu citizen and we're wondering which is the best route for us to live together in the UK. We were working on a cruise ship and I obviously can't return because of my pregnancy. I spoke with a immigration solicitor from CAB and he basically said there's no way of my partner joining me until I'm earning nearly £19,000 which won't be possible for me for the next year until my maternity ends. Are there any other options for us?

Thanks for any replies in advance

Any recent ancestors born in an EU member state, an Italian grandparent for instance? Or is he eligible to apply for a Croatian passport?

Your solicitor is correct. Unless you can fulfill the financial requirements there is no route for your partner to join you in the UK.

Were you earning over 18,600 GBP prior to the pregnancy? Are you getting maternity benefits - these can be used towards the requirements.?

If not, then you could move to your partner's home country.

or going the surinder singh route through Malta appears to be the easiest route

http://britcits.blogspot.ca/2014/08/...d-and-dee.html

Understand though its a 4-6 month process requiring the Brit to work minimum 12 hours per week

where medical care for Brits is covered.

I'm on maternity pay now, but I wasn't earning that much beforehand.

We have considered taking that route but in Ireland. I will do some research on Malta. Thanks

Just to mention that doing the SS route, you the sponsor has to move your 'centre of life' to the host country.

Malta seems to be easier to do than going the Ireland route, especially in the tourist season. Furnished places to rent are less costly than in Ireland, weather is better etc

Good luck

Don't forget that the OP is pregnant so not in the best possible position to move, get a job and set up life in another EU state.
