US Citizen married to British citizen (dual citizenship)
 

Hi all

Ive browsed around but am a bit confused. We live in the US, husband has dual citizenship and I am an American citizen. Our lifelong plan is to eventually split our time between the UK and US. I’d like to eventually obtain UK citizenship (dual) if I meet the criteria. Id like to understand what are the routes to do so.

It seems I have to live there for 5 years? Based on my plans described above, is this my only option? We have financial means for proof of savings if needed. If establishing residency is my only option, must it be full time residency? Is there a certain minimum time that we’d need to spend there per year to qualify as residents?

Any information or clarification is very much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Do you have any recent British or Irish ancestry? If not then living in the UK for five years on a spouse visa is likely to be your only option. You should be looking to spend the majority of your time in the UK during this period but you could split your time between the two countries, e.g. five months in the US and seven months in the UK.
