What does the INS do with your passport when you take it to your interview re N400 application.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

I've never been to an N400 interview I can imagine all they do is use it to verify
your identity. I doubt it is stamped in any way.

I'm not sure what the 400 is.
If it's an I-130 filing, as LD said they only use it for indentification.
They don't stamp it.
The visa comes in the form of a "colourful" A4 (ish) piece
of paper with all of your info on it.
This is stapled to the "mysterious brown envelope" which is your case history,and must be kept in your hand luggage
(un-tampered) for presentation to the INS at your POE.

the N 400 is to apply for citizenship/naturalisation. I have a friend who has been here for 19 years and is now applying to change her status, but she's worried that they will do something with her passport which will make it invalid. She wants to be a dual citizen with the UK and US. She doesn't want any surprises when she goes for her interview.

To lose your british citizenship you have to go and physically renounce it before an
officer of the British embassy. Whatever happens at the interview will make no
difference as to what the UK thinks your citizenship is. You will always be British
in their eyes.

What actually happens to your passport at the interview I cannot say having only just
started on this path, but I can promise you your friends UK citizenship is in no
danger of being lost.

I am a Canadian and have had my N-400 interview and they did absolutely nothing with
my passport.. Am going to the oath ceremony this Friday and won't be taking my
passport with me as it's not needed..

An immigration lawyer observes:

most people don't even bother to take the passport to the naturalization interview.
Sometimes, its helpful if you have been spending a lot of time outside of the US
during the requisite residence period.

In any case, no entry in made in the passport.

BTW, although the U.S. requires you to renounce your allegiance to the Queen, the
Queen refuses to recognize that allegiance. IOW, you become a dual national.
