UK passport EU spouse and children
I am a British Citizen by birth and have been living in South Africa for 15 years. I intend returning to live England permanently in 2018 and need advice on the status of my husband and two children who will be coming with me.
I know that I will be granted entry as a British Citizen, but I am not sure what to expect for my family. The three of them have German passports by descent so I know from past experience that they don’t need anything when we travel to the UK on holiday with a set date to return, but I am not sure if there is a difference if they arrive with one way tickets. Do they need any additional documentation to enter the UK or are their German passports alone sufficient to be granted entry?

Provide your British passport is valid as well as their German passports then you won't have any problems. In fact you can just use the ePassport gates on arrival. Arriving before Brexit is a smart move for your husband. In theory he should be eligible for the 'settled' status post-Brexit. I would also advise you to obtain your children's British passports, either now or shortly after you return. You may find it easy to do it now with the relevant documentation to hand and finding a countersignatory for their photos.
