Timeline and passport return

We are trying to figure out when to apply for my wife's spousal visa from the US. We want to move to England mid-December. She wants to take a trip overseas from mid-August to mid-September and will thus need her passport. If we have the application fully completed online with all documents downloaded so that when she gets back from her trip we can just hit send, is it likely we'll have a response (hopefully favorable!) within 3 months? How long is it currently taking? I think our application is fairly simple; going the savings route, married 7 years together 25, no unusual circumstances.... Should she go on her trip and use priority filing or just not go? I know no-one has a crystal ball so no guarantees but can anyone give me a general feel for timelines.
Thanks

The standard processing time is 12 weeks so she should go on her trip and apply when she gets back. Just be mindful of the 28 day rule and make sure your financial requirements details/documents are up to date if you’re going to prep it before she travels.

I haven't heard of the 28 day rule?

Does anyone know what BritInParis means by the 28 day rule? Thanks

I think he means that some of the financial documents can't be older than 28 days. So if you get everything ready, then go on holiday, make sure that the documents are dated within the last 28 days when you actually submit the application.

All your financial documents (payslips/bank statements etc) to prove your financial eligibility cannot be more than 28 days old.
