UK citizen with an American wife. When we enter Ireland I have heard conflicting stories on telling immigration your intentions. Do I tell them we are there to exercise free movement?

I am a bit surpised this has not been answered. I've just joined the forum and would like to re ask this question.

Is it better to tell immigration at Ireland (or any other EEA country for that matter) one's intention concerning European Free Movement or try to convince them it is just a tourism trip?

I hope I understand the issues and have asked an appropriate question, thanks for any answers.

When entering Ireland to do SSR, simply state that you as the EU Cit. is exercising treaty rights to live and work in Ireland and your non-eu family members come under this also. Say that you understand that you have 90 days as a visitor and after that you will be 'exercising treaty rights'. The non-EU Cit. may not be stamped for 90 days but do not worry about that because you are allowed to stay for 90 days and can go to the local Garda (police station) to get the 90 day visitor stamp if you desire. You will then apply for a resident card for the non-eu cit. and other non-EU family members by filling out form EU1 and sending to immigration. It takes a maximum of 6 months for a decision to be made regarding resident card but you will receive what is known as Stamp 4 (temporary RC).

Just be honest when coming through immigration and you will not have any problems. They are very kind and helpful!
