Spousal visa to Citizenship (BNO)

My wife is coming to the end of her second 2.5 year spousal visa. She is a holder of a BNO (British National Overseas) passport. What are the next steps for her to become a citizen?
Can she apply for citizenship now or does she have to do anything before this?
Also is it any different due to having the BNO passport?
Many thanks

She needs to apply for ILR first.

Ok, so no real advantage of having the BNO, apart from when then applying for citizenship it's slightly cheaper is that right?

Also if she becomes a British Citizen, does she effectively surrender her BNO status and would be left with a British Passport and Hong Kong passport?

Not in her situation. For anyone starting now there is the BN(O) visa.

Yes; she will register rather than naturalise as a British citizen, which is slightly cheaper. From that point onwards she will hold a British Citizen passport and a HKSAR passport.
