Sending passports with visa application

Hi everyone - we are about to submit my husband's visa request for the spouse visa. I note that he is required to submit his current (Australian) passport. Can anyone tell me - do they hang onto it for the full processing time? Would be good to know when we are likely to have it returned.

Yes.... they require it for the whole of the processing time.
