Anybody renounced their Uk citizenship? The documentation required to prove nationality is (quoted from the gov.uk website) 'your passport or if you don't have one your birth cert." Thing is, I have a passport and need to do some urgent travel in December. Will the government accept my birth cert instead of my passport?

You will need to show proof that you were a British citizen and that you have another citizenship. The Home Office will take away your British passport when your citizenship is renounced and that British passport will, obviously, not be valid for travel any more. I hope you're not thinking about holding on to your British passport when renouncing. This won't work.

I sent my birth certificate as I lost my UK passport. I also didn't send my Irish passport (my second citizenship). I sent a certified copy of it signed off by the Irish Embassy in Beijing, along with my original birth certificate. I also sent off a copy of the Irish citizenship laws proving without a doubt that I was Irish.

Advice: you had better get the form signed by a doctor. That way it is harder for the Home Office to say that you may be of unsound mind.

My renunciation took about 2.5 months (or so, can't remember exactly).

PS: I take it you already have a strong proof of your other citizenship. IF you don't have proof of another citizenship they won't allow you to renounce British citizenship (rules about statelessness).
