I wouldn't touch HSBC with a bargepole. Go for Nationwide. Not quite as good as they have been in the past in terms of perks, but their customer service is heads and shoulders above every other high street bank and as a building society they answer to their customers not shareholders.

Depends who you bank with.

I went through hell trying to open a bank account with NatWest for my niece (who's a student), despite the fact my wife banks with them. Gave up in the end.

I personally bank with Bank of Scotland (never moved my account down to London), which didn't help. But I have a mortgage with C&G which meant an account with Lloyds. Wish I'd gone to Lloyds first as I had no problems opening a bank account at Llloyds for her since it was the same address as an existing account holder, who was present, along with her passport to prove identity.

(It's all so much harder these days because of global money laundering rules that got brought in after 9/11).
