My wife is an Ethiopian. She was born and grew up in Ethiopia but her parents were born in
the new country, Eritrea which got independence from Ethiopia in 1992. Her family lived in
Ethiopia for long time but due to the current problem between Ethiopia and Eritrea, her
parents have been deported to Eritrea like many other ethnic Eritreans who lived in
Ethiopia. Like I said before, she was born and grew up in Ethiopia and she has an
Ethiopian passport because she is an Ethiopian citizen. We got married three years ago and
she got the conditional permanent residence one year ago because of our marriage. Her
passport has already expired but she is afraid that the Ethiopian Embassy will not renew
her passport because her parents happen to be from Eritrea. We filed all our paper work
with INS as her being an Ethiopian citizen because she is and has always been Ethiopian.
Her passport and birth certificate and all other documents reflect that citizenship. We
are ready to remove the condition on her permanent residence and need to know if this
passport renewal issue poses any problem? How does INS deal with someone who's consulate
refuses to renew his/her passport based on ethnicity? Does anyone have any idea about how
we can solve this problem? Does she have to get an Eritrean passport? This problem seems
similar to the problem with the east block countries which were part of the former soviet
union. Any kind of advice is greatly appreciated!

Hogan,

You are a step ahead of yourself. You may not have any issue with the INS if your wife
has a valid passport, so stop worrying about the INS until you have dealt with the
passport issue.

You said that your wife is worried that the Ethiopian government will not renew her
passport. Worrying about what might happen will not create a solution. Research the issue
and then apply for the renewal. It's the only way to know for sure if you have a real
problem or just an imagined one.

Good luck.

Regards, JEff there are no stupid questions, but there are a lot of inquisitive idiots
