I think the title of this thread should be amended to make it clear that the changes are from 9th July 2012 - to most British eyes (and a lot of people not living in the US/Canada) that date looks like 7th September 2012.

It helps to spell out the month on an international forum.

Completely agree. I read the date as 7 September 2012 and not as July 9, 2012!

Right then... so I'm reading this means we'd have to pull 62,500 GBP out of a hat, and leave it sit somewhere happily for six months before leaving Australia to permanently move me and my Aussie husband to the UK?

This is tricky because we don't have anything like that kind of lazy cash and we wouldn't want to sell up the house six months before we left Australia.

The other scary thing, to me, in this document is the brief reference to the possible need to tighten migration rules even more after this lot of new rules is introduced.

My understanding is you have to have minimum cash savings of 16k gbp, with any amount above that 16k allowed to be used towards a calculated formula of funds required to be on hand during a five year assessment process.

I thought it was just 16k at first too... but on further reading I'm pretty sure it's just the tip of the iceberg.

Can someone please explain the logic, of my 4 Aussie born and raised kids, (and their future kids I think ?), having automatic citizenship to the UK. Whereas my partner of over 30years and parent of 4 potentially UK passport holding kids isnt ?

I know. It's crazy. I wish the media in the UK was a bit more sympathetic, but nobody gives a hoot.

Migrants is migrants is migrants, blah blah.

I'm surprised the Australian media hasn't picked up on it yet. It's going to affect a lot of the population in one way or another.

That said, I read on a thread somewhere there are changes here next month too. ... And we can't expect sympathies from the Brits when the Aussie government is knocking back a British policeman because his son is autistic. (in todays press.)
