Is my partner entitled to UK passport?
 

Hi all,

I haven't been on here in so long.

My partner and i have decided to return to the UK after being in Australia for almost 9 years.

My partner was born in Australia (1977) but his mum was born in the UK and still has UK citizenship and his dad was born in Switzerland but also has UK citizenship.

Does anyone know if my partner is able to get a UK passport? If hes not entitled to one, how are you getting your partners over to the UK?

His father is probably British by descent, so he didn't get British citizenship from the father. And in 1977, British mothers couldn't pass on their citizenship.

However, it seems that he is eligible to register as a British citizen.

Also, as an Australian citizen with a U.K.-born mother, it already appears he has Right of Abode. He can apply for a Right of Abode stamp in his Australian passport, if he wishes.


How quickly do you plan to make the move?

We wont be moving for approx 2 years but i'm just trying to get all the information together now.

What does the Right of Abode mean? Will he have full rights to work etc in the UK?

My husband just did this. His mother was UK born but emigrated to Aus as a child and he was born in the first half of the last century (LOL). It was a very straightforward process - completing the UKM form (he was in UK which made it easier to get documents checked by the Document Checking Service) - took about 4 months from submitting documents to citizenship ceremony. He now has all rights of a UK citizen - work, health etc. It wasnt an expensive proces either - from our end only about £80 and that was essentially for the citizenship ceremony (assume they do that in High Commissions overseas).

Good luck, it will be easier in the long run, but you can start it right now!

I've just had a look on the UK Border Agency website. It seems simple enough. How did your husband enter the UK?
So just so i'm getting this right, we should only have to pay the £80 and nothing else for him to obtain Citizenship?

It's £80 for the citizenship ceremony, but the actual passport will set you back $275.32 (price changes depending on the exchange rate). You'll need to apply at Australian Post and include his registration certificate which you'll receive at the ceremony.
