After reading various threads, wiki's and FAQ's I am getting way too confused, so I thought maybe a kind soul on the board could help me on this!

I am originally from the UK and my wife, plus wee 13 months old son are American. My wife lived with me in the UK from 2000 to 2005, I believe now her VISA would have expired.

I have worked for the same company since 2002, and have been given a new opportunity back in the UK office paying 40k GBP per year, which I believe exceeds the requirements.....

This is where I get confused. I am assuming that my employer must state that I will get this job within three months? However I must also provide proof that I have been earning at least 18,600 GBP (or equivalent if its a different currency?) over the previous six months?

YOU must sponsor your wife for a spouse visa.

With current employer for 6 months or more : sponsor returning to the UK.

You sound as though you fit this category perfectly - been working for current employer for over 6 months and earning over the financial requirements AND returning to UK with a job starting within 3 months of returning and again earning over the financial requirements.

You must produce the letter of employment plus the contract showing that you have this new job, together with proof (payslips, bank deposits etc) that you have worked at and earned the financial requirements at current job.

What visa did your wife have? Did she have Indefinite Leave to Remain?

Presumably she did not become a British citizen (she would have been eligible at the time). It would make things a lot simpler now.
