Just thought you'd all like to know that after they wrote and said they'd destroyed all the evidence of us ever having sent the certificate in, I unearthed the actual receipt they gave us when my husband submitted the documents, which noted the certificate on it. So I emailed them back and said even if they didn't have proof, I did, and they asked me to fax it over.

Which I did.

Then today, I get an email which admits the mistake and asks us to send in his passport to have the endorsement corrected to ILE.

Hooray!!!!

Thank you all for your support and for making me think that we actually had a case.

Wow! I am so glad this was resolved for you. It just shows how important it us to keep receipts etc, forever, if necessary!

Good to hear, and it also saves you around £1k. Where do you have to send the passport to?

Next application will now be for naturalisation after 3 years residency.

Yes, I agree 100% with Michali. NEVER throw away any communication from UKBA... at least not till long after you have British citizenship, and even then I'd keep some.
