EEA Residence card questions

EEA Residence card questions
Hi
I have just sent EEA qp application + EEA fm application to home office and they have recieved it on 02/08/16.
My question is We need the passport and my wife's id card back. Will we receive any docs including case reference number? if we do how much days it takes?
and anybody knows how long it takes to recieve COA from home office?
Im just scared that if there is an emergency situation we do not have our identity card or passport with us and we just need them back asap.
Any help will be appreciated. Thank you
