Default Do I qualify for British Passport

Hello,

Was wondering if anyone could anwser a few questions and evaulate my situation.

I am 26 year old canadian born in Canada (born after 01.01.83) and was wondering if I qualify for a british passport. Here is my situation.

My father was born in England but immigrated to Canada when he was 6 years old. His parents were born in the Ukraine, but moved to England after WW2. I'm not sure if they were British Citizens but would assume so.

My father has never held a British Passport but am I correct to assume that he could apply for British Citizenship, after which I could apply for a british passport?

On my mothers side, both her parents were born in Scotland and moved to Canada as well. She was born in Canada.

Any suggestions or feedback would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

It would seem that your father was most likely a British citizen at birth, as before 1983 birth in the UK usually resulted in British citizenship (the exception to this was children of diplomats). As long as he hasn't lost or renounced his citizenship along the way, then you would be British by descent (as long as your parents were married at the time of your birth) - which means, yes you can apply for a British passport.

Your father wouldn't need to apply for British citizenship, as it sounds like he is most likely already a British citizen (not holding a passport makes no difference).

As someone else has said, you are almost certainly a British citizen IF your parents were married (at the time of your birth, and it's normally ok if they married afterwards).

If your parents never married, and don't plan to marry, then sorry, you're too late to register as British based on an unmarried father. The age limit is 18.
