This question is primarily a matter of curiosity as it pertains to my now deceased maternal grandfather . He was born in British India in 1925. Moved to UK sometime in 1948 and ran an exim business. Was resident there until around 1961-62. Subsequently traveled there a few times . My mother was born in UK during this period, which is my eligibility for UKM registration.
However, what was his status ? As I see it, he was a British subject at birth . He moved to UK prior to both the British Nationality Act and the 1955 Indian Citizenship Act, which was applied effective the day India became a republic ie Jan 26 1950 . He would therefore have been (automatically ?)!a CUKC, who resides in UK for over 10 years. However he wasn’t resident the previous 5 years as of 1971 or 1983. He was alive in 1983 (deceased 2014).
Would he have been a British citizen in 1983 ? And did he acquire the ability to pass citizenship by descent ? I’m guessing no, since he did not properly acquire right of abode, but I’m really not clear on the rules here . It’s not clear if he registered or naturalized in any manner .

Spotted this before; it’s on my ‘to-do’ list but I’ll need to do a bit of checking first and since I’m currently enjoying a cold beer by the Black Sea it’ll have to wait until after I get back from holiday
