This was discussed in another thread, so best to read the links here:

From the above thread, this link may be good to keep an eye on:

Here is one of the many threads about it.
Toeic Letter and home office detention centre : UK Tier 4 (Student) visas • Immigrationboards.com
New English tests will be in place from 6th April with only two approved colleges. Those being:-
1) Trinity College of London - These are only conducted in the UK, not outside anymore.
2) IELTS - This is now the only approved test outside of the UK. They have made a new test specifically for speaking and listening only, to A1 and B1 levels. This is called IELTS Life Skills.

Nothing about EEA family members and the suite of related 'visas'/permits here, right? Or am I missing something?

However, once in the UK the visitor can apply to extend their visit to the full 6 months if they change their mind, but that will cost them about £600 to apply for that extension.
It appears that the above rule will not apply to non British Citizen British Passport holders like British National (Overseas) and British Subjects. See the link below - section 23B (page 6) of the Immigration Rules part 1.

I read about this the other day, it alarms me that this wasn't the case in the first place. What was it before, just a yes/no tick box for criminal record on the application form ?!!

Bizarrely, it seems the UK has always just relied on people being honest with their self declaration about their criminal past! Unlike other western countries, where they check the applicants criminal history before issuing visas. The UK is now moving in line with other western countries. It's much easier to refuse a visa, than to have to remove UK citizenship for obtaining any visa/UK citizenship, by deception.

Although the rules were changed in the Immigration Act 2014 so that the removal of citizenship has now been made much easier to do. That Act also changed removal of citizenship laws: before the UK couldn't remove citizenship if that was the only one they held but now their UK citizenship can be removed if the Home Office think they have a claim to another citizenship. Enforcing the "UK citizenship is a priviledge, not a right".

The Good Character rules were also changed recently and are retrospective to protect the UK. Lack of respect for UK laws inluding Immigration laws and driving laws; overstaying a visa by more than 28 days; entering the UK illegally; making false claims to any government department (ie UKVI, DVLA, the NHS, any welfare department ect); repeated minor driving offences; cautions; time in prison now not counted for years in the UK for ILR ect, now causes between 3 - 15 years delay to be able to pass of the Good Character requirement. And some will now never pass the Good Character requirement and will never be granted UK citizenship.

This is UK Immigration laws, only part of which will impact on EEAs if they want UK citizenship i.e. English test, Good Character requirement.

Changes for EEAs come under EU laws changes; or the UK changing laws within exisiting EU laws, or other countries making changes that the UK then adopts too.* The latter (and sometimes the former) is always retrospective. i.e the UK's, no more than 3 months as a jobseeker to have a right to reside as a qualified person, which came in January 2014 but affects EEAs before that even if they have worked in the UK at some time: or the UK bringing in that students and self sufficients and their dependants needed full health insurance to have a right to reside in the UK as a qualified person; any changes to the Singh route ect.

Full appeal rights (going through several courts even if they keep losing in each court) have been removed for correct refusals of applications under Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 5, which will now bring these visas into line with the appeal changes in 2014 for Tier 4 applicants. The Immigration Act 2014 law changes will mean that although those failed applicants can still try to remain in the UK claiming human rights or refugee status, their case is unlikely to succeed.

Michali, these appeal rights don't seem to affect spouse visas. It seems it will be easier under these new laws for these applicants because an incorrect refusal for a spouse visa can now go to AR, without the need for the expense of courts. Unless of course, their circumstances have changed since their visa was issued, or they gave false information or failed to declare material facts in a visa application.
