Default British Passports for my US born kids

Hi everyone,

I'm new here and I have a couple questions regarding passports for my children. I have lived in the US for 12 years - originally from UK, British born and hold a British passport.

My two children (11 and 7) were born in the US and hold US passports. I am thinking of moving back to the UK. Can my kids gets British passports as I'm British? It may be a simple question but I've seen so much contradicting info online, I am so confused!

Thank you!!!

Welcome to BE.

If you were born in the UK to British parents then you children will automatically be British by descent and you can get their British Passports simply by applying and completing the required forms,

You can use the link below to apply for your children's British Passports -

https://www.gov.uk/overseas-passports

You may want to consider getting US citizenship before moving back to the UK if not already done so.

Thank you for all the info everyone!

Why do you suggest getting citizenship? I am a permanent resident already.

If you are the mother then your children will automatically be British by descent and need only apply for their British passports. HKG3 has provided you with the correct link.

In case in the future you wanted to move back to the US. Permanent resident status is only maintained while you are resident, I understand that if you leave for more than a year you are likely to lose it.

Thats correct, please see links below for details -

Given the fact that the OP's children and husband are US citizens, having US citizenship herself would give her more flexibility if she wants to return to the US for good at any time.

The same thing for the OP's husband. Once he got Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), he should also apply for British Citizenship in order to give him more options for the future.
