British passport / working entitlement - Citizenship by descent

Hi,

I'm looking for clarification on eligibility for British citizenship / passport / ability to work in the UK.

Status:
I was born in USA in 1987
Mother born in UK - now residing in USA. Still has British passport.
Father born in USA

Please can someone clarify this would be 'British citizenship by descent' and if this means eligibility for British passport / citizenship.

I believe this page applies??

Thanks!

If your mother was born in the UK and you were born after 1982, you ARE a British citizen by descent. You can apply for a passport, (and once you have it) move to the UK (just buy a plane ticket, no other notice is required), take up employment, register to vote, etc.

Just to clarify - you are saying I am already a British citizen and can immediately apply for a British passport based upon this citizenship?

So - is there a need to register as a British citizen prior to passport application?
Thanks

Yes, exactly as I said, you ARE a British citzen.

It might have been different if you had been born prior to 1982, but given the year of your birth you are in the clear. .... So collect the necessary supporting documentation, fill in the passport application form, and send your application. :)

The OP can apply for a British passport in the US using the link below -

https://www.gov.uk/overseas-passports

The OP should consider applying now as the exchange rate is favorable.

As the Rt. Hon. Member for Dixie points out it appears you are already a British citizen by descent. You need only apply for your British passport. Consular birth registration is available if you wish to have future-proof evidence of your British citizenship but this is optional.
