Correct me if I am wrong, but you can usually apply for a passport anytime you wanted (do not need to show proof of travel etc.). I would think this is the case for Indian passports too.

Also I was pointing out to the OP he may not have thought about the potential problems for a British citizen getting visas for a long stay in India if he regrets coming to UK. Particularly in his case with his father born in Lahore. As the dates show it was British India then not Pakistan, but I have heard that even so there are often delays in getting visas to enter India.

British citizens can now apply online for an Indian eVisitor visa which should make things easier. Also the OP could enquire about whether he would become eligible for an Overseas Citizen of India passport which acts as a multiple entry, multi-purpose life long visit visa.

The OP could have apply for a certificate of entitlement at the British High Commission in India using his Indian passport instead of getting a British Citizen passport.
I cannot see why the OP is in a 'grey area' as the OP was born in India in the 70's with an Indian mother.

The 'grey area' is because one parent was born in what is now Pakistan. As it was then British India and his father is apparently Hindu theoretically there should be no problem but in practice there are often delays.
India is very strict about issuing visas to a foreign passport holder with a Pakistan connection particularly since the David Headley terrorism episode. (You can look it up!)
It is just something that OP should at least think about.

Wishing a very happy new year to all.
Its taking a long long time.I am bit worried. Still security checks are going on.
Any idea how long these checks could take place???

No definite answer as it will depend on each individual's circumstances but the application process can take over a year.

I have been mailing Liverpool passport office regularly since I submitted my application .They were very prompt in reply. For the last 10 days I mailed thrice but to my surprise I received no response from them. What could be the reason???

Seriously, there's probably nothing new to tell you. If you've fulfilled all their requests then you just need to sit back and be patient.

How can I accelerate this process of getting British passport?I need to travel US or any other foreign country for some reason .As I have already applied for British passport, cannot i apply for any other passport(most probably Indian) in the mean time as checks are very time consuming.I think it would be illegal? Please share your opinion.

If your application for a British passport was successful you would lose your Indian citizenship and would have to give up the Indian passport and have restrictions on remaining in India--visa would be necessary.
If you get British passport you would be able to apply for an OCI visa which is life-long (It is not a passport as mentioned previously), but as I mentioned before your connection with Pakistan might interfere with this.
