British citizenship document

I am South African living in London. Have had British citizenship by descent since I was a minor. Recently tried to renew my SA passport and was told I need to prove when and how I got British citizenship. How can I get this? I have tried endless avenues to no avail. Can anybody help?

A late reply to this thread, but if someone acquired British citizenship automatically at birth, the birth certificates of the parents (plus marriage certificate, normally) should be sufficient evidence of this.
