Am I British by Descent?
Hi all,
I am 37 and lived and went to school in the UK when I was 8 and left at 12 yrs old. My father was born to my grandmother in England. He does have a British Birth Certificate. My father then was adopted by an American Serviceman that married my Grandmother when he was young. My father of course came to the States. My father met my mother in the States and I was born in 1977 in Portsmouth New Hampshire. My parents were married at my birth but divorced soon after when I was 2.
My question is can I apply for a British Passport so I can live and work in the UK?

Re: Am I British by Descent?
Your father is British by birth, and being adopted out to non-British parents has never caused loss of British citizenship.
Since you have a British born father, and your parents were married, it appears that you are a British citizen by descent. You may prove this by obtaining a British consular birth certificate and/or British passport.
Is your father a U.S. citizen? Simply being adopted by a U.S. parent does not in itself cause a person to become a U.S. citizen.

Thank you...he is a dual national. I suppose I just submit my certificate and ID along with his birth certificate?
