Question Accommodation on arrival - duration?

Hi everyone. So, the boys' UK passports arrived this week, I have all my various scads of paperwork pulled together and I'm sitting down to go through the visa application site tomorrow.

My last (well, for now ) question is around the accommodation requirement and people's experience of using AirBNB, hotels, etc. in the application. We're headed into a new town for us (Ely, Cambs) and we want to actually visit anywhere we're going to rent for 12+ months, so this makes the most sense as we can be flexible.
  1. Has anyone used a hotel or the like on the application, and has this been a problem?
  2. How long was your initial reservation for? I'm thinking we'd have something at least for the initial three weeks, then go from there.
  3. Did this come up in discussions with the immigration service?
I could book something for say 2-3 months, but the options are limited, and the cancellation fees are eye-watering.

Thoughts, comments, sage advice gratefully received!
