Royal Plaza Hotel - Hong Kong
We are considering booking the Royal Plaza Hotel for 5 nights. It is situated on Prince Edward Road West, Mong Kok, Kowloon. It has decent reviews on Expedia but we are not sure if it is suitable for a family holiday. However it seems to be the only place with family rooms we can find.
Any opinions / advice / experience welcomed as we haven't been to Hong Kong before and just don't know the best area or hotel to stay.
Thanks.

Re: Royal Plaza Hotel - Hong Kong
It wouldn't be top of my pops for a first visit.
How did you find this hotel to start with?
Something like the Regal Riverside in Shatin might be a starter for you.
They do suites which are good value and even though it's not on the island it is easy to get there as a regular hotel bus will take you to the train station for a 20 to 30 min trip to Central.
There are other options as well.
Have you confirmed your booking yet?
BTW I haven't stayed in the Royal Plaza.

We found the hotel on Expedia. We haven't booked yet, just looking for information. We have also been looking at the Harbour Plaza hotel on Victoria harbour, but not sure if this is a bit of a trek to shops/resteraunts???
We will check out the Regal Riverside. Thanks for the tip.

Re: Royal Plaza Hotel - Hong Kong
I stayed in the Regal Riverside for nearly a year 12 years ago.
It was excellent then.
Having read the recent reviews it appears to be the choice of tour groups from China these days.
Nothing wrong with that.
Another hotel on Shatin in your price range is the Royal Park which is even better placed than the Regal Riverside and newer.
This is a good site to check out other hotels http://www.asiarooms.com/hong_kong/h...ng-hotels.html
We used to put some staff up in the Panda in Tsuen Wan. It's bit further out but great value.
If you wanted to up your spend then The Excellsior in Causeway is always a good bet.
But have a look at the site I posted and come back with your choices.
There WILL be posters here who can help further.
Of course The YMCA in Kowloon is as good as it gets location wise, right next to the Peninsula and the swimming pool at the YMCA is the best in HK.
Not much above your buget either. Worth considering.

Depends what you plan to do on your holiday - you can't really get more into the thick of things than Mongkok if bargain shopping and local flavour is your thing (also lots of cool toyshops for kids of all ages), but Shatin might be more suitable if you plan to take in the countryside.

Re: Royal Plaza Hotel - Hong Kong
Thanks again
We are still browsing. I like the look of the Excelsior
281 Gloucester Road, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong
They have complimentary places for children under 12, close to shops etc and Harbour views. Anyone got any views??
We are after something comfortable, suitable for a child and easy to get to around from.

The Excelsior is a great hotel and is perfectly situated for transport, shopping, nightlife etc. It is also across the road from the noonday gun if you want to be either a mad dog or an Englishman!
What is your budget by the way?

Thanks DD
We went ahead and booked the Excelsior. It's reviews said it was a bit old fshioned but everything else was good - plus we liked the position. We didn't have a budget as such, we hoped to get away with a cheap hotel, but obviously we didn't.. LOL

I love Mong Kok. It's the closest thing on Earth to being in the movie 'The Blade Runner'. But I really think you did better choosing Causeway Bay (especially with the kids). You should be well situated for seeing a bit of HK.
Still, I would try to take a trip up to experience the night market in Mong Kok at least one night.

Re: Royal Plaza Hotel - Hong Kong
It's a very nice hotel. Absolute harbourfront. Great Chinese restaurant Hoi Yat Heen in the hotel.
Hunghom is mainly a residential area. The hotel is a bit further away from the crowds and main shopping areas in Tsimshatsui, but not that far, just a short taxi ride. And it's only a couple of minutes walk to the Hunghom Star Ferry.
A few of the mainland Chinese leaders have stayed there during their visits because of it's quieter location comparing to other 5-star hotels and it's easy to secure, i.e. not many other buildings and shops around it.
Enjoy your stay.

Re: Royal Plaza Hotel - Hong Kong
Just wanted to say we are currently staying in Hong Kong - at the Excelsior and it is a lovely hotel. We would recommend it to anyone else wanting a comfortable hotel. The staff are very attentive and the place is spotless. The decor is a little worn in the room but perfectly serviceable. The location is fab - 2 mins walk from the MTR. We haven't taken a taxi the whole time we have been here.
