Pure Sonography jobs in HK?
Hi everyone
I'm a graduate in Sonography and looking to relocate from Australia to HK this year. In Australia sonographers are very much in demand however when I search for jobs in HK, the jobs seem to be only a rare few. Why is that? I would have thought ultrasound would have been a growing modality in HK?
Some insights into the ultrasound and medical imaging market in HK would be greatly appreciated!
thanks

Hi all,
I'm also a medical imaging student from Australia. I am currently in the 2nd year of the course and have thought about moving to Hong Kong after I finish my PDY in a few years’ time. So any information anyone can provide is appreciated.

I'm not in the hospital industry, but my first thought would be that maybe these jobs are mainly advertised in Chinese as it could be the sort of job you'd only get locals filling ? Just an idea, it is very specialist.

I am a radiographer in a public hospital in HK, from what I have seen radiographers here to do more than one modality. All the sonographers work in general xray and have to participate in the shift system too. That may be why you can't find any jobs specifically aimed at sonographers advertised. The starting wage for a general radiographe is around 25,000HKD p/m.
Maybe look at the private sector? I have an english friend who does just scanning in a private clinic, but I couldn't tell you how easy it is to find work.
I am hoping to move onto australia at the end of the year, initially as a radiographer but I would like to train as a sonographer eventually. I've heard that it is extremely difficult to find a placement, do you have advice for me?
Thanks!

Based on what I've heard from radiographers currently being employed as well as newly radiography graduates from last year that it's really difficult to find a placement in Australia right now. Most graduates could only get placements in rural areas and the number of available positions was really limited. I suggest you get a placement lined up before coming so you won't find yourself having a hard time looking for one when you are here.
Anyway, are you able to tell me more about working as a radiographer in HK? Such as the working environment, living cost (rent, food, transport, are you able to save up any money), workload, how did apply for the job and do you enjoy working in HK.
I would love to read your feedback.

Hi all,
I am working as a sonographer in sydney. There's a lot of competition in position for fresh graduate but if you are experienced, it might be easier.

Re: Pure Sonography jobs in HK?
Hi everyone,
I'm a radiographer working in Singapore. I graduated from University of Sydney, and have worked for years as a radiographer/sonographer in Singapore.
I am now thinking of moving to either HK or Australia to work as a mammographer/general radiographer. I too heard from my friends in Australia that it is really difficult to get a position in Australia now, especially in the major cities.
So I thought moving to HK will be a better choice (and I love that city too!). It will be great if someone working as a radiographer in HK now can give me more information, such as pay, working environment, workload in both hospitals and private clinics.
Is it still easy to get a job now?
Will be great too if someone can recommend a good job agency. Thank you so much!

Re: Pure Sonography jobs in HK?
Hi all
I am an experienced sonographer who just moved back to Hong Kong due to family reasons. First of all, a sonographer job is relatively difficult to find in HK because there is no registered board for this occupation. (for example, you have Australian Sonograhers Accreditation Registry in australia) What this means is that not many (actually very few) will advertise for a "sonographer"- instead, they will advertise for a radiographer with sonography experience.
From emails i still get from Australia, it is much easier to find a sonography job there, esp if your qualifications allow you to register with the ASAR. In australia, the sonography field is well established. Sonographers are well trained and trusted and expected to be able to give differential diagnoses. From my brief experience here in HK, there is a lot more autonomy and trust as a sonographer in aust. To me, there is a greater sense of job satisfaction there. And i wish the HK field will evolve that way as well.
However, if you are a fresh grad, HK may be a good option. They train you in absolutely everything- esp CT, mamm, MRi! Paywise...i reckon is comparable to au.
I havent found an agency like you would in UK or AU in HK. I just looked on the net for job vacancies.
If you want more info, email me- i'll try to answer as many questions as i can, cos i know how frustrating it was trying to find a job in hk

My degree is a diagnostic radiography one, which means that I cannot work in HK as a sonographer too, right?
Do you recommend working in the public or private sector in HK? And do you have some specific job sites to recommend? I usually just search on google.
Thanks again!

Re: Pure Sonography jobs in HK?
hey.
There is no need to register as a sonographer in HK as there isnt a board. They advertise there as "radiographer" and just mention that you are ultrasound capable. As to private or public? I just took the first job that came to me, which happened to be a private clinic. So I can't help you on that one. If you are after public jobs, head to ha.org.hk. As for private..like you, I just googled.
If you are still considering AU...apply as a radiographer and express your interest in sonography. Many work places will train you as soon as they can. In Australia, you have to get ASAR accreditation before you can start scanning. Have a look at their website also if you are keen.
