Can anyone help how much we need to carry in cash for the spending money to Hongkong for 10 days??? Only for food and transportation and maybe some entrance to tourists object like Ocean Park and other things.

Do you think 10 days in Hongkong will be too long for us? Can anyone enlighthen us what places to go that we shouldn't miss?

Thanks in advance.

Why do you need to carry cash? I would have thought a credit card (Visa or Mastercard) was safer.

Yes we do have credit cards, but expenses like MTR or eating out in stalls don't think we will use the cards.

I just want to know how much we will have to spend on the little items like that (shops, cafes, taxis and others means of transport), been there but over 6 years ago. So I think we lost touch now.

I thought any board member here who been to Hongkong can enlighthen us.

How many of you travelling? Assuming occasionally you eat at nice places and shop at stores where credit cards are accepted, try budgeting about $150 per person per day, and when you run out of cash, you can always take out money from the hole-on-the-wall anywhere. The charge by your bank and the network is normally GBP2.50 per transaction. If there's extra cash left, use it up on the last day or at the duty free or donate it to United Nations' "Change for Good" program on your flight out.

10 days is not too long. Here're a few personal suggestions:

1/ The Peak - go up there on a clear day during day time, and another time at night. Have dinner at one of the restaurants up there. Try taking the tram up and bus down, or vice versa, for different experiences.

2/ Lantau Island - visit the Big Budha and the Po Lin Temple, enjoy a delicious vegetarian lunch (always get the deluxe lunch because the food is better and it's air-conditioned and less crowded). Then take the bus/taxi to Tai O to see the fishing village. And lastly take bus or taxi to Tung Chung, and from there the MTR back to the city or wherever you're staying. At Tung Chung if you have the time and energy, find a display unit of the new apartments which are for sale and see how much space the locals live in.

3/ Lamma Island - have seafood lunch there and walk from one pier to another (Yung Su Wan to Sok Gu Wan, or vice versa, about 2 hours) to catch the ferry back to Central. This is guaranteed to be one of the most relaxing day.

4/ Ocean Park - a must if you have children. The pandas are fun/boring to watch depending on who you are - they just sit there and eat bamboo all day - I find them cute. The dolphin and seal show is fabulous. And don't miss the aquarium and the shark tank if you like marine life.

5/ Stanley Market - shops are sometimes tourist traps but they are still great fun to visit. Have a lovely pizza at Firenza, and a pint of your favourite draught beer at the waterfront. The bus ride to and from Stanley Market is unforgettable. Try one trip via the Aberdeen tunnel and another going the longer route.

6/ Repulse Bay - go there on a week day and enjoy a good swim. Have a meal at the former Repulse Bay Hotel restaurant. Can't remember the name now though. Again exciting bus trip to and from there.

7/ Temple Street at night to see the stalls and Cantonese operas on the street.

8/ Ladies Street - I'm not a huge fan but it's still worth a visit if you've never been before.

9/ Ap Liu Street - if you are a real geek - this is great for all the electronic components. Fascinating to look even if you're not buying. Lots of the radio equipments are illegal locally but can be exported.

9/ Have a drink/dinner at Felix at the top of the Penisula Hotel in Tsimshatsui, looking over the harbour. Admire their restrooms while you're there whether or not you need to go. You won't regret it. The men's room apparently is more interesting than the ladies'.

10/ Have another drink/dinner at the Island Shangri-La, looking over the harbour.

11/ If you have extra time, hop over to Macau for a day or two. Have a great Portugese meal at Fernando's - their sea bass and prawns are a must if you like seafood. They also make wonderful bread rolls. Visit a casino or two and perhaps win back all your spending. On a second thought you might want to visit Macau first and make some money for all your shopping trips in HK?! HK dollars are widely accepted in Macau, as are credit cards.

12/ Wong Tai Sin temple - a popular place for the locals for all the Chinese festival. I'm not a big fan of crowded and smokey places but this temple is one of the most important ones in HK. Again, you can go there at the start of your stay and ask the fortune teller whether or not it's worth the hassle going to Macau, apart from having a meal at Fernando's.

13/ Antique stores on Hollywood Road - very interesting place if you like old stuff - old furniture, chinaware, paintings, etc.

14/ If you want a suit made, visit one of them in Tsimshatsui. They can custom-make suits and shirts in 3-7 days. The more time you have the better so that you can go in for at least one fitting before picking the suit up or having it delivered to your hotel. Another thing you should do at the start of the trip if you want it done. You can get a suit made for as little as $2000 or as much as twenty times depending on the fabric and the shop. Shirts usually start from about $150 and up. This is not just for men, but for ladies as well.

15/ And if this list isn't enough, have a look at the Hong Kong Tourism Board's web site.

Hope that's enough for you to start with.

Cheers,
Mrs JTL

Argh JTL ... u r really a doll ... thank you very much for taking the time replying my post.

We will be travelling 2 adult and 1 child (4 years old).

1. Yes we defenitely will heading up to the peak. 6 years ago when we went there... we visited 'Repley's Museum' (is it still there???). We would like to visit the museum again. And yes we will go to the peak during the night too for sure.

2. Yes we will go to Lantau Island ... do u think worth it eating vegatarian dishes since both of us not vegetarian hehe...And what u will see in the fishing village ??? I assume I will find the view just like in the mandarin movies that I used to watch

3. Lamma Island .... never been there. Will defenitely make the point to visit the place.

4. Been to Ocean Park 6 years ago, this time we will defenitely go for our little one.

5. Yes will defenitely walking around at Stanley Market. We not planning to buy anything in Hongkong. Just sight seeing and looking around. So don't think we will buy anything. Mind you 6 years ago we had a bad experience regarding shopping in Hongkong. These people who works in the shop they are bloody aggresive, once you stop in their window, they will try their best to drag you inside. And once you get inside you won't be able to get out !!!

6. I think I remember a bit about repulse bay ... the bus trip just like go up to the hill and the view just so beautiful.

7. Yes will walk around at temple street. Might buy chinese dress for myself from there

8. Ladies street... never been there ... so will hv a look too...

9. Ap Liu Street ... not my cup of tea. But sure hubby will want to visit the visit the place.

10. Nah ... i hv question here. Island Shangri-La??? Is that a name of an island? Hotel? or restaurant? I aware there is a hotel chains call Shangri-La too.

11. Been to Macau 6 years ago ... view is very beautiful. Dunno wether we want to go there again or not since we will have 4 years old boy with us (don't think he can get in to the casino).

12. Wong Tai Sin temple It will be our last priority probably. I am not a temple fans, and between me and hubby I think we have enought temples tours in some countries. Hehehe... But defenitely will go if we run out things to do ...

13&14... i think we will give it a miss.

and 15 .... yess ... will have a look at the site after i post this.

Now then ... I have another question ... 6 years ago we went to a restaurant call 'Igor's Restaurant'. They are theme restaurant. Their bus picked us up in the hotel and drop us back. The staff dressing with Halloween themes (all these ghostly characters). They have live band with Halloween costumes... and basically everything is set up with ghostly stuffs. Anyway ... do u know wether the restaurant still open for business? We would like to go there again, but not sure wether kids allow to dine in.

Thank you very much for your reply... i do really appreciate it.

Hi Novita,

The meals at Po Lin Temple are nice, even for non-vegetarians. Some dishes actually tastes like meat! My husband and I both love meat but enjoyed lunch there nonetheless. In Tai O you'll see houses built on stilt and waterways among houses. It's not exactly Venice but interesting to compare it to the rest of the city. I found a very good web site on Lantau Island. You'll find other articles on the rest of HK and Asia as well.

You guess right, the Island Shangri-La is part of the hotel chain. There are two in HK, the other one is called Kowloon Shangri-La in Tsimshatsui. The one on HK Island is situated right above the swanky Pacific Place shopping mall.

Macau's worth a visit even if you don't go into the casinos. I don't usually go to them anyway. I just love the little alleys. It's a much more laid back city than HK and food is much cheaper there too.

Igor's has closed down the theme dinner restaurant but have opened up a few other ventures which are all quite good. A couple of them are at Stanley Beach. It's a tough call between having pizza at Wildfire or at Firenze. Personally I prefer the food at Firenze but the view at Wildfire.

Oh I didn't mention the obvious - don't forget to take your kid on the Star Ferry and the trams. If you have any specific questions on where to eat and shop, let me know your preferences, I might be able to give you some recommendations.

Have fun now,
Mrs JTL

No problem. How did you guess I might have lived there before?! Was it that obvious?! Well, I'm Chinese and grew up in Hong Kong and lived there on-and-off for a total of 15 years. My parents and brother still live there but they'll be visiting us in for 10 days next Saturday onwards. Can't wait to see them especially with all the goodies they're bringing for me!

Seems like you'll be collecting lots of mileage...

Cheers,
