Trouble in Paradise
Some of Britain's Cayman Islands chickens may be coming home to roost, after decades of neglect. It is the British Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) that takes responsibility for the good governance of all the colonies, and the FCO has been slacking off for a long time.
In the face of the most blatant corruption in Turks & Caicos Islands (TCI), the FCO eventually plucked up the energy to suspend the local Constitution a few years ago and to rule by decree from London. The former TCI Premier is reported to have accumulated $180 million during his time in the local legislature. Free from that entanglement now, the FCO should be ready to tackle similar allegations of corruption in Cayman. Instead, it is dragging its feet and pretending our politicians can sort out the allegations themselves. As if!
As a general statement, local attitudes to British intervention are divided along ethnic lines. Every expat would like direct rule to be imposed a.s.a.p.; most native-born Caymanians wouldn't. The stakes are huge - no less than the future prosperity of the richest little Island in the Caribbean region.
The topic is not one that affects many people on this website, I guess; those few who are interested should check my blog.

Re: Trouble in Paradise
Here is a fairly comprehensive summary of our political situation and the mess our former Premier finds himself in. Trouble in paradise, indeed!
